Fit Tips!

*This information is for educational purposes only. Please consult a professional before beginning any exercise routine. If you ever experience any discomfort, pain, dizziness or feel uncomfortable in any way, stop exercising immediately and seek medical attention.*

Fitness should be a part of everyone's daily life. Parents can do a few basic things to help their
children become more active including: develop awareness about fitness, set goals with your
children for activity levels, give them praise for their efforts and lead by example!

Today's tip is for balance! Balance is an essential life skill that transfers into every part of
our daily life. Increasing your balance will also make you better at sports too!

  Start   Midpoint

We are going to use the “front kick” and “standing side kick” we learned in earlier fit tips segments.

Start in ‘forward stance' and extend your
right leg out into ‘front kick' position.

Keep your hands held up high and your
eyes fixed forward.

Count to see how long you can keep
your leg up in the air!

Once your foot comes down, switch feet
and do the same thing with your left leg.

Then switch to a ‘standing side kick' position.

When you are doing this kick, push
your heel out to the side!

Again, hold out your right leg out in standing
side kick position for as long as you can and
then switch to your left leg.

*Make a game out of this, by competing against a friend or family member to see who can hold out their leg longer!

Parents

•  When your child is doing these kicks make sure they keep their stomach tight for balance! Keep their knees bent to exercise the legs as well! Have your child count and see how long they can hold the positions for! Make a game of it and keep track of how long you can go for!

Conclusion

• Today we learned exercises that
will increase your balance!

•  It should be every family member's goal
to integrate fitness into their daily lives.

•  Study's show that children spend up to 5 hours per day watching TV and playing on the computer!

These exercises are a great addition to an exercise routine, try performing the kick holds at the end of a sports session or while out hiking with your family!
