• WHO ARE THE KARATE KIDS’ INSTRUCTORS?

One instructor is a Black belt teacher from a local Martial Arts Centre. The other is a certified fitness trainer or fitness enthusiast that has the important role of walking around the class, ensuring your child enjoys their experience and is available to give one to one attention to the students during the class.

Additionally, all of our Instructors take part in an in-house comprehensive training program prior to teaching a Karate Kids class. New instructors are always paired up with senior instructors for a term for extra training. In addition, they have all provided annual clear Vulnerable Sector Screens or Criminal Record Checks as required by our company and the school boards.

  • HOW MANY WEEKS IS THE PROGRAM?

The Karate Kids program is a 12-week class at most schools. Depending on gym space availability, the class may be 1-2 weeks shorter and the price will be adjusted accordingly.

WHERE AND WHEN DO THE CLASSES TAKE PLACE?

Classes take place in the school gymnasium, one designated day per week, during the lunch-hour recess or the 40-minute nutrition breaks (depending on your region).

HOW LONG ARE KARATE KIDS’ CLASSES?

Classes are 40 minutes long with a minimum of 25 minutes of high-energy movement.

WHAT GRADES CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE CLASS?

To find out what grade range will be offered at your child’s school, you will have to wait for program information to be sent home from the school. Karate Kids is typically offered to students in grades 1 through 5. However, the offered grade range can differ in each school depending on the Principal’s decision.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE CLASS SIZE?

An average Karate Kids class has 36 to 45 students and 2 Instructors. In larger classes, Karate Kids maintains a ratio of 1 Instructor to 20 students. For enrolment, Karate Kids accepts members on a first come first serve basis.

Uniforms will be handed out during the first three weeks of class and is included in the membership fee. The T-shirt is meant to be worn all day on KARATE CLASS DAY and the belt is to be brought to class.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A CLASS IS CANCELLED?

When a class is cancelled due to inclement weather or a school event using the gym that day, we will do our best to accommodate adding a make-up class during the program or extend the last class one week. However, this is not something we can guarantee. Our instructors are scheduled to teach at other schools immediately after the end of this program, which may prevent our ability to add one more class.

In the rare case we are not able to make up a class, that was cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control (weather), NO refund will be available for the missed class.

  • WHAT IS THE REFUND POLICY?

At any time during the first 3 classes, if your child is not enjoying the program, you may withdraw them from the program and receive a refund for the remaining classes.

After the 3rd class, no further refunds will be available.

One of the key reasons for this stems from our core value of helping students stick with a commitment.

The more times a child practices sticking with something they have started, even when new distractions arise, they are forming a habit of commitment and follow through. This is an extremely important character trait to help young children develop.

When our students are awarded their coloured stripe for their belt at graduation, it brings them a great deal of pride and a feeling of accomplishment. This bolsters their confidence and their self-esteem.

HOW DO I WITHDRAW MY CHILD FROM THE PROGRAM?

If you need to withdraw your child from the program, the only way to do so is by emailing us at info@karatekids.ca or emailing your designated Program Manager.

We DO NOT accept handwritten notes submitted to the school or from students to the instructors (due to frequent situations where the note is not received).

Students are not allowed to withdraw themselves and will be expected to attend class until we receive an email from the parents/guardian notifying us of their official withdrawal.

  • WHAT IS THE KARATE KIDS UNIFORM

The Karate Kids uniform is made up of a team t-shirt and a karate belt. We do not give a traditional Gi (jacket) or pants as having a t-shirt they can wear for the day is much more fun and saves time in getting to class (instead of having to change).

Most students start with a white belt and can work their way up to an orange and black stripe belt after 3 terms in the program. Side note: Please do not wash the belts!

MY CHILD ALREADY HAS A KARATE UNIFORM, CAN THEY WEAR IT TO KARATE KIDS CLASS?

The quick answer is NO  We strive to create a team environment, so it is important that all of our participants wear the matching Karate Kids uniform each week.

We do not offer the traditional Karate uniform of GI (jacket) or pants because having the kids change before and after class would eat up ten minutes or more of precious class time 

However, students are welcome to bring their own previously earned colour belt to class if they wish so they can show off what level they have already achieved.

*Also students with higher-level belts and previous martial arts experience are more likely to be selected earlier in the program for the leadership team.

WHAT LEVEL OF MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING CAN MY CHILD ACHIEVE IN THIS CLASS?

Our program is a basic-level introduction to Martial Arts. Our class curriculum is non-contact foundational movements to help students get comfortable and to help them build confidence and leadership skills.

Karate is only one aspect of the class. We also work on fitness levels and character development including social bonding, mindfulness, and self-regulation.

If your intention is to have your child take part in more extensive advanced martial arts training, we encourage you to find a local martial arts club to sign up with for after-school training, especially if your child has the interest and desire to do so! Visit the “Our Affiliate” tab to find a local martial arts center in your area!
